After decades of efforts from the NRA and other organizations, as well as countless individuals, residents will now be able to obtain their long-awaited concealed carry permit in Illinois. This has come to the delight of millions of registered gun owners throughout the state, as well as the Chicago area. As expected, news of the landmark legislation has opened up a floodgate of questions.
To help you gain a more comprehensive understanding of the process of applying for your Illinois CCL permit, we’re listing some of the most frequently asked questions that we receive, here at Concealed Carry of Illinois.
How do I apply for a concealed carry permit in Illinois?
Before you can apply for your permit, you must first receive your Concealed-Carry Certification. This involves completing and passing the Illinois State Firearm Safety and Concealed Carry course. Once you have completed the class, you can then apply for your Illinois permit, which will allow you to carry a concealed weapon in approved places throughout the state of Illinois. Application information will be forthcoming, as it has not yet been released at the time of writing this article.
How long is the IL Concealed Carry certification class?
If you do not have prior firearms safety training, you will be required to take a 16-hour Concealed Carry class. This is a mandatory class traditionally given over a two-day period, and covers everything needed to safely own, maintain, store, carry and utilize a concealed firearm. For those who do have prior firearm training (ex-military, police, security, trained citizens), you may only be required to take the 8-hour Concealed Carry class.
How long does it take to receive my CCL permit?
Unlike the certainty of a 16-hour class, no concrete dates have been issued as to when the first state-issued CCL permits will be made available. As with any government agency, there is the issue of backlog to deal with. And Illinois is no exception, as evidenced by the delays that are already being experienced in obtaining an IL FOID Card. Some industry experts have suggested that it would be akin to the time needed to apply for and receive one’s passport.
Will there be concealed carry classes in Chicago?
Classes for Illinois concealed carry certification, will be offered at several locations throughout the greater Chicago area, making them accessible for gun owners who live on the north or south sides, as well as those in the suburbs. Classes are already forming in Lombard and Wheeling IL, though seating is limited and early registration is strongly advised. More locations will be announced over the coming weeks and months.
